Webinar: What does sociocracy offer towards ending classism?

Date(s) - 11/20/2017
1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

  • Classism – the systematic oppression of subordinated socioeconomic groups to advantage and strengthen the dominant class groups.
  • Sociocracy – an approach to governance where everyone’s voice matters

We know the pain of living a society of extreme inequality. And even when we organize towards a world of greater equality we tend to focus on what is wrong rather than what could be. And yet, within our own activist organizations, we re-enact power over systems either because allow unexamined classist dynamics to play out, or we create organizational structures and use decision-making methods that don’t actually include the voices of all the organization’s members.

Class Action has been a leader in raising the issue of classism into our consciousness. Sociocracy For All has been a leader in promoting sociocracy as an inclusive and egalitarian approach to organizing ourselves and society.

In this webinar, we will briefly describe sociocracy and classism, present what sociocracy offers to towards ending classism and discuss the challenges of ending classism within sociocracy and the challenges of implementing sociocracy in a classist world. Jerry Koch-Gonzalez, co-founder of Sociocracy For All and a former Board President/Executive Director of Class Action, and Anne Phillips, the current Executive Director of Class Action, will take turns presenting information, then entering into a dialog with each other and opening up to comments and questions from the audience.
